St Joseph's visit
At the end of Term 3 the Year 6's and 7's from St Joseph's Wyndham came down from Wydham to Perth for there camp to Perth. On Monday the whole school gathered for an assembly to meet the St Joseph's children who had flown a long way to be at our school. The class was really small but all of the students were really nice and friendly. On Monday evening we welcomed the St Joseph's students with a picnic. We got to meet the students and get to know them which was very helpful as on Tuesday we went to on an excursion with them to Saint Vincent de Paul. We learnt all about the Saint Vincent de Paul youth camps, the history behind the founding of Saint Vincent de Paul and what their shops are like. On Wednesday we made posters on Wyndham in groups of 4 and then we went to the allocated junior class and presented our posters to them. It was really interesting to here what it was like to live in Wyndham and the different aspects in Wyndham that are different to Perth. The year 6 class all really enjoyed meeting the St Joseph's students. Many of us learnt many differences about life in the Kimberley and Perth, the weather is definitely very different up there and much hotter. We were also a little bit jealous about the huge barramundi that some of the students have caught up there. We made many friendships with them in such a short time and hope that we will see some of them next year in high school.
Government House
On the 27th of August we travelled to Government House. The building was very large and grand and was surrounded by beautiful gardens and ponds. We were shown around Government House, she showed us how all the windows and most of the doors have bullet proof glass and a high tech locking systems. We then went inside to a huge wooden staircase and classic Gothic style architecture and features. Though it was incredible for us to see all the fancy fittings we were there to learn about the roles of the Chief Justice and Governor. We learnt about all the past Governors of WA through all the paintings in order across the wall. We also learnt about all the special rooms and what the furniture was used for. One of the exciting things that we learnt about on the excursion was the story about the lady who shot her fiancé in the Government House Ballroom because she heard that he took another woman to the ball with him. We then met Chief Justice Wayne Martin and he taught us about what his role is like as Chief Justice and Acting Governor. We were all very grateful and happy to be provided with a special morning tea and some time to ask Chief Justice some questions. We all really appreciate going on the excursion to government house as it was really interesting to see what it is like to live on only a small step away from royalty.
Readers cup
This term our teacher chose two students to participate in the Readers Cup challenge for book week. From Year Six Adam and Lucia participated.Year 4s and 5s were also part of the challenge. Every week they went to the library and borrowed books to read. They prepared to answer questions based on the books. There are a range of picture books and novels for us to read. There are two teams with 3 members in each. They also wrote book reviews to give to the librarian.
Interschool sports
On the 8th of May, the year 5 and 6 students participated in our first Interschool sports games. We had a lot of fun playing Netball and soccer. We came prepared with full of energy and confidence. Many of us did not get a quarter off and played the whole game! We were all hot and sweaty and were all relieved when it started to rain heavily. We came back to school with one spectacular win and a bunch of drenched students!
Mothers day
On Friday the 9th, 2014 the year 2 class held Mother's Day mass to celebrate our loving mothers who do so much for us. The mass was held at our school parish. In the beginning of the mass some year 2 students brought down items such as Band-Aids and irons to represent what our mothers do for us. Each student wrote a prayer about what their mothers do for them. Each class put their prayers in their class box. The boxes had one letter each. Together, they spelt 'MOTHERS.' At the end of the mass we held our tradition of all the mothers standing at the altar and we sing "song for mum". Like usual many mums had tears in their eyes. We also had our Mothers' Day stall where we bought gifts for our mothers. We all love our mums and think we should be extra nice to them this Mother's Day!
Speaker of the year
Speaker of the Year was a couple of weeks ago. Students from years 5 and 6 prepared and presented a speech to their class. Everyone spoke clearly and confidently and made the judges completely perplexed as to who would get selected. Each speech was well organised and of a high quality. After one week, the results were announced and everyone was excited to find out who the 13 finalists were.
The finals night was on Wednesday the 28th of May and all of the finalists did an outstanding job. Everyone was competing for the multiple runner-up awards and for the title of Speaker of the Year 2014. After all the speakers had presented, everyone was eager to find out the results. Madeleine in Year 6 received first place, Tanisha in Year 6 received second and Benjamin in Year 5 received third place. All of the finalists showed good sportsmanship by congratulating the winners, and were awarded with a morning tea with the staff.
Reading club
Reading club is held on Thursday lunchtimes in the library. It is held by two year 6 bookworms who are learning to take on the leadership role of responsibility. The pair is focusing on improving the reading and writing skills of the younger children. Every week, a book is read and the participants draw their favourite characters. The Reading Club group is hoping to have a narrative writing station where the students get to write their own stories with interesting vocabulary. The aim of the club is to encourage students to be more creative and have fun with fantasy!
Student principal for a day
This term the our teacher informed us about Principal of the Day and told us that we had to enter via application. The application involved a picture that said: Leadership is …
and a word that the applicants thought meant leadership. Along with the picture applicants wrote a small blurb about leadership and why they would be a great Student Principal. Ben was chosen to be our Principal for a Day. Here is what he wrote about it.
“Being student principal was fascinating and inspiring for me because I got lots of opportunities that I would have never have gotten in my old schools! I want to thank our own actual principal and all of the staff for being so kind to me when I was around them! I also want to thank my fellow classmates for all their support as well as Mrs Cahill and my family. Overall I think being principal for a day is a really inspiring experience!”
